TNWR CREATES MEMORIES
Since the beginning of TNWR Group in 2015, we have endeavored to present activities that connected us with the history of our hometown and beyond, as well as recapturing the memories of our past. Thisjourney down memory lane included:
-
Bus tours of Black Norfolk’s history for Booker T. Washington High School Classes, and area white churches who wanted to understand Black Norfolk’s history from their neighborhood perspective.
-
Participation in the Recognition Marker for Norfolk’s City Beach, the first beach that Black\people were allowed to swim and enjoy.
-
Recently we returned to City Beach for the Chrysler Museum’s Sand to Glass Exhibit. We collected sand from the beach, and it was converted into glass. This was part of a project where sand was collected from all over the world. https://chrysler.org/exhibition/to-see-a-world-in-a-grain-of-sand/
-
Celebrating our third TNWR Anniversary at the original Hawkins Inn with an evening of memories and wonderful entertainment. It was called The Function at the Junction. A favorite food was also served that night, bringing back authentic memories of early days, Yock a Mein.
-
Participating in the Annual Bay Shore Beach Experience, which celebrated the memory of All Black beaches across the country. TNWR received honors and plaques for our research of the history of Norfolk’s City Beach, and Seaview Beach in Virginia Beach, VA.
-
TNWR provided research history for the reunions of neighborhoods and Booker T. Washington Classes, students, and historical events.
-
Participating, and researching information for the celebration of the 100th Anniversary of the Attucks Theater and Booker T. Washington High School 102 Anniversary.
-
Most recently, TNWR sponsored a historical excursion on Carnival Magic Cruise Ship from Norfolk to Bimini Bahamas. Our members' attendance, 50+ of us learned the historical connection of the Bahamas and Norfolk VA. We enjoyed the exclusive hospitality of Nassau, Bimini, and Freeport directed by the Bahamian Bureau of Tourism.
