THE NORFOLK WE REMEMBER, LLC: Our Experiences, Joys & Our History

Growing up in Norfolk, Virginia, as Colored, Negro, or Black youth, we experienced life differently from those of other races who lived in separate sections of the city.

Our neighborhoods were distinct, and attending separate schools was once the norm. Our experiences, joys, and history were uniquely our own. At one time, all our activities—social, religious, or recreational—were one-dimensional and exclusive to our community.

These youthful experiences, along with the desire to remember and honor our accomplishments, led to the creation of The Norfolk We Remember (TNWR) in 2015. While other social media groups recalled growing up in Norfolk or highlighted encounters that were not our own, we were often excluded from places, activities, social events, schools, and beaches that other youth enjoyed.

Despite these youthful restrictions, TNWR aims to reflect on the events and activities we cherished, our vast achievements, the goals we reached, our history, and the richness that shaped us into who we are today.

In the TNWR Facebook group, we explore places that we, our parents, grandparents, and friends enjoyed. We delve into the history of our neighborhoods, where we studied, played, and discovered new adventures. Some topics and discussions are historical to some and remembered by others. Younger members learn about our past, gaining insights they might not have encountered otherwise.

This website offers everyone a way to explore, remember, discover, and enjoy a glimpse of the past while hoping for the future. Feel free to comment, leave suggestions, and most importantly, share THE NORFOLK WE REMEMBER with others!

Continuing our research can be time-consuming and costly. Please support our mission to keep Norfolk's history alive with a small donation today. Every dollar counts in helping us continue sharing the history we all cherish. Thank you for your generosity!
